Cobbled stones can produce some great looking styles, and many people choose to use them for their own homes. Often times you’ll find them used for pathways leading through and around gardens as well as to pave a driveway.

Building a pathway is actually quite simple, and if you were looking for a project to undertake yourself, this could be very suitable and a great way to save some money too. Doing it for a pathway or patio can be done in just a few simple steps, which are as follows:

  • Plan out the size of the patio/pathway; map the surface area so that you don’t severely under/overestimate the amount of stones that are required.
  • Dig down to a depth which includes 2/3 of the size of the cobbles (usually 20-40cm thick) + 40cm.
  • Fill in those 40cm with mortar material such as concrete (ideally concrete), which the cobbles will rest on.
  • Before the concrete has a chance to set, you’ll want to add the cobbled directly onto the surface.
  • When laying the cobbles, you’ll want to push them into the mortar to about half of their depth. That should make them roughly level with the surrounding ground layer.

The good thing about using this method is that you generally don’t need to add any further mortar to fill in the gaps, as it should squeeze up between those gaps as part of the process.
