If you have just bought your first home and want to try and do some decorating, then it can be nerve wrecking knowing where to start. It is always a good idea to have a go at decorating somewhere that you are not too concerned about such as a utility room or spare bedroom. Like anything, you will become better at decorating the more you practice and there are some great online tutorials that will help you get started and find out some tips and tricks of the trade. Often hanging wallpaper is the most difficult part of decorating a room. You do need to take your time and plan out who you are going to do it in order to ensure that you do not waste too much paper.

When choosing your wallpaper, you need to see if it is pasting the wall or paste the paper design. Pasting the wall can often be easier as you do not have to allow the paper to hang but it can mean that you have to work quickly before the paste starts to dry. If you are pasting the paper, be sure to first mix the paste to the right consistence. Once you have done this measure and cut your first piece of paper. You need to ensure that the paper goes round a corner and not right into it as the wall is unlikely to be exactly straight so you may find that it doesn’t sit down the line as it should.

Always cut the paper with about 15-20 cm spare top and bottom to allow for trimming. Once you have pasted the paper fold the two ends in and hang it up for a few minutes to stretch. You can then unfold it and start to hang it making sure that you smooth out any bubbles.

If the paper has a pattern you need to make sure that you cut the next piece to line up to it. You may wish to do this first before you hang it all but be sure to double check as making a mistake here could mean you have a lot of wasted wallpaper. Sometimes it is a good idea to have two or more rolls of paper open (if you are sure you are going to need to use them all) as this way you can find the one that matches the pattern with the least amount of waste. When buying multiple rolls of wallpaper, be sure that the batch number of pattern number are the same as otherwise there can be slight differences in the pattern or colours of the paper.
